"Melange fabric, which comes from the French word "melange" meaning "mixture," is a textile known for its distinct, heathered appearance created by blending different colored fibers. This blending process produces a fabric that has a subtle, multi-tonal look and a soft, luxurious texture."

What is Melange Yarn?
MÊlange or grey melange yarn may be defined as “the yarn produced by the combination of at least two or more than two fibers”. Conventionally, the term melange is used for such yarns which are produced by the combination of two fibers (whether of same type but different in color or type of fiber used is different). In case of cotton grey mÊlange yarn “a melange yarn is the yarn which is produced with various combinations of raw white and dyed cottons or dyed fibers.” For example, if we mix 99% raw white cotton and 1% dyed cotton (of any color), then it will called mÊlange yarn. Melange yarn is beautiful and unique in appearance. Its structure is quite different from traditional yarn. Its color and appearance are various.

Melange yarn is a blend of different colored fibers to develop various shades in the yarn. Different in ratio of fibers in the blend alters the uniqueness of spun melange yarns. There is a large variety in melange yarns not only in terms of colors but also according to the texture of the yarn. The final feel, hand, and aesthetic of each class is different, which opens up the room for designers to choose fibers and yarn types selectively, what they require but also suggests the researchers researching in the field of image processing to develop computational models for the assessment and inspection of the quality of the final products.

Melange yarns can be classified into two of it’s vary basic types:

1. Blended grey mÊlange yarn
2. Non‐blended grey mÊlange yarn

1. Blended MÊlange Yarn:
Such type of yarn in which different fibers are mixed/blended together in a certain fixed ratio for instance PC (Polyester: Cotton blend) 50:50, PV (Polyester: Viscose) 80:20, CV (Cotton : Viscose) 60:40 etc.

2. Non‐Blended MÊlange Yarn:
Yarn in which there are no different fibers blended together, but different colored fibers of same type are used to make the yarn e.g. 100% cotton dyed yarn, etc.

MELANGE OR GREY MELANGE OR GREY MARL FABRIC
You'll frequently hear about grey mÊlange fabric (some call it 'grey marl'). But all fabrics of this type aren't actually grey melange. So you'd better call it melange fabrics. And melange fabrics can be categorized into 4 basic types:

1. Grey mÊlange (90% cotton + 10% viscose) Image
2. Light grey melange (95% cotton + 5% viscose) Image
3. Anthra mÊlange or dark grey mÊlange (85% cotton + 15% viscose or 80% cotton + 20% viscose) Image
4. Ecru mÊlange (98% cotton + 2% viscose) Image

Thus if we increase the percentage of viscose then the yarn shade/ effect will be darker. Melange yarn is a little expensive that normal cotton yarn. The more the viscose, the more the yarn price is. And the fabrics which are knitted by grey mÊlange yarns don't need to be dyed- only some sort of washing/ finishing process is applied. So here dyeing cost is almost zero. Fabric properties of cotton & grey mealange are nearly the same. Also, melange fabrics can be made with Lycra/ elastane/ spandex. They can be single jersey, interock, fleece, terry or even rib knits.

Now-a-days, you'll see some more melange fabrics which are not grey at all- it can be in blue or in other colors with melange effect. In these cases, the composition may not be cotton-viscose. Rather some fibers (of the yarn) can be dyed in other color replacing the viscose (or even the cotton part/ cotton fibers).

Melange fabrics are actually a natural yarn fabrics. These fabrics are made with a mixer of cotton and viscose yarns (blended yarns). So whenever your buyer/ customer asks for melange fabrics, you should ask for the ratio of cotton and viscose first or you should ask for a swatch of the melange fabrics to understand the composition and melange effect.

Viscose: Viscose fiber is made from purified cellulose, it is produced from specially processed wood pulp. Viscose is very similar to cotton and silk . It is a fine and soft material commonly used in t-shirts , tunics , shirts and dresses ,all of them ,includes cellulose. There are two kinds of fibres: natural (cotton, wool and silk) ; and artificial ones synthesised out of petrochemicals (nylon and polyester).

1. Feeder stripe: Feeder stripe has a small repeating unit approximately 1.9 inch or not more than 5cm. Productivity is high. Production cost is low $0.25-$0.30. Image

2. Engineering/Auto stripe: Engineering/Auto stripe has large repeating unit. Repeating unit more than 5cm. There is no limitation in repeating unit. Productivity low. Production cost high approximately 7-10 times higher $2-$3. Image

5. What GSM? Ans: GSM stands for grams per square metre, which refers to the weight of a fabric. In general, the higher a fabric's GSM, the thicker and more hard-wearing it's likely to be.
6. Dying of Solid/Dark color fabric: It takes around 8 hours to complete dying, It needs more dye staffs/chemicals, It's process loss is low. (Price of solid dying may be $2/kg)
7. Dying of White/Light color fabric: It takes around 4-5 hours to complete dying, It needs less dye staffs/chemicals, It's process loss is high. (Price of white dying may be $1/kg)
